Bulletin from Brighton

a corner of the drawing room of our Brighton 'rooms' [click to enlarge]

We are continuing to languish somewhat lazily, but enjoyably, in our Brighton 'rooms' making the most of the sea air before our return shortly to Budapest. During this time we have been somewhat neglectful of both commenting and posting, for which we apologise profusely.

It is our intention to publish a new post at the start of March, and we are much looking forward to having the time to catch up with all of our Followers and Friends early next week.

N.B. A number of people who have been kind enough to leave comments on our last post have expressed concern that the comment has disappeared. This is not in fact so, but any comments, over the total of 200, do not appear unless a further comment is made. They are, we assure you, all valued and published, along with a reply to each one. This appears to be one of the latest of the Blogger Blips!!

  2. I like to think of you relaxing in Brighton, drinking coffee and watching the world go by from the wonderful cafe you shared with us. I can almost smell the sea air and hear the gull. Thank you for sharing the picture--the paintings, books, roosters etc. make it a most personal and comfortable corner.

  3. Dear Jane and Lance - so pleased to learn that you are both alright. I was wondering if all was well with you.
This is the best time of the year to languish and take things easy, and I notice that you have plenty of books around you in which to indulge.

  4. Glad to hear about the Blogger Blips (I was wondering if something like that might have happened). In the meantime, I am happy that you are continuing enjoy your lazy languish, and I hope you have a smooth, safe journey to Budapest. I am looking forward to seeing you back here in March...and, until then, will miss you (HATTATT is one of the cornerstones of my little blog universe :) ! Fondly, ERS

  5. Hello Jane and Lance. Very glad to know that your apparent absence is only because you've been taking things easy. Go on relaxing and we'll welcome you back when you're ready.

Sorry to hear about the comment blip - not one that most of us will have occasion to encounter. :-)

  6. Any sadness that you will soon NOT be breathing the balmy(?) sea-air a mere 12 miles or so down the coast from me right now is tempered by the satisfaction that you will shortly be back to blogging from Ungarn (sorry, I don't know the Magyar for it) with some more amazing pics.
Have a safe, pleasant journey back - and we look forward to reading your blog again in a few days' time. Cheerio till then.

  7. Dear Lance and Jane,
How delightful to see you again.
I know only too well about the "blibs"..
I am wondering if the lovely painting is possibly both of you taking afternoon tea!..
Such a super collection of roosters..
Stay well and have a good journey.
    Until March
    all the best..

  8. What a lovely drawing room, thanks for sharing it!
It sounds excellent, what you've been doing. Sea air, there's nothing like it, we'll be traveling down to Florida on Friday and it is the air I am looking forward to it, the humidity.
Safe travels back to Budapest and I look forward to reading your post in March.

  9. Hello Jane and Lance, I hope I did not bother you too much with my concern. I am glad you received my comment. This sneek peak into your Brighton castle is very nice. I am glad you are enjoying the sea air (envy you!) Have a good journey to Budapest! By the way: Will you take Trevor with you? I hope he is not left alone... Bye for now! Christa

  10. What a little nook to have a lazy languish in. It is also just that time of year when batteries can feel a bit run down, languish away, you have been missed but taking things easy should always come first in my book.

  11. Hello Jane and Lance

I love the tranquil and welcome atmosphere of your Brighton rooms. I have been thinking of you daily and keeping you in prayer. What books are you reading? I just finished reading Secret Scriptures by Sebastian Barry - a brilliant writer and I have been on Amazon stockpiling his works.
Continue to enjoy your days and rest.
    Fondest wishes

  12. Oh good. Just when I was starting to be concerned! Glad to hear that all is well and you are both just taking your time getting back up to speed (or conversely are still down-shifting into winter, as I am). Like Jen, I always picture you in that incredibly charming café--now I have a further glimpse of your rooms! Hooray! I certainly hope that Trevor is turning out to be the fine company that he promised to be.
I am heading to Michigan for a visit with my Mom and Sis--I am sure that you both can imagine how excited I am. So I won't be around for a bit either. It's ok. I certainly know that all of your friends will wait for your return with much impatience!
    With love from Arles!

  13. I like the picture next to the sideboard. Is that a double portrait? It's interesting how the two arched niches reflect and anchor the sets of diners, creating an almost architectural double perspective, as though the painting's distant roots were in Canaletto (if that makes any sense). At any rate, the portions in that restaurant seem quite ample.

  14. Lovely to see your light pop on again, and what an inviting corner. The sunny light is wonderful, and the cozy stacks of books to hand by the fire make the perfect retreat. I SO love that you think of this charming place as your 'rooms,' in the manner of Sherlock Holmes. "Taking rooms" has ever-so-much-more charm in the reading than leasing or renting.

I'm glad that you'll be back soon---I look forward to the glimpses you share of places I'll never see. When I used to think of going to England, the idea of Brighton probably eclipsed London (though neither the Cotswolds nor Yorkshire)---my longing to see that bright coast was second only to Lydia Bennet's, and for quite more innocent reasons.

And a part of me would STILL expect to see everyone frolicking in demure old-fashioned black bathing-dress.

  15. Hallo dear friends,

I hope that your sojourn in Brighton has brought the benefits you were hoping for and that all is well again and you will soon be able to repair to less bracing climes.

Your rooms are delightful, most suitable for this enchanting town, which values eccentricity like few others in the UK.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Good to hear from you both again. i trust that you've been managing to keep warm and cosy in your 'rooms'. I suppose Budapest to be much colder in winter.

Posting, reading and replying to comments must occupy much of your time so you deserve a break.

    Take care.

  17. It amazes me how you all take the time to reply to everyone of your commenters, and keep the dialogue going so well.
I love all the roosters! You must miss them in Budapest.
I trust you are both well now since you will be returning home soon. I have been thinking of you over the last couple of months and happy to see you are now back on the blog scene once again.
    Namaste.

  20. What a charming space. The paintings are wonderful~ particulary the one 'at table'...is it possibly the two of you? it looks similiar to a photo that you posted at one time.

  30. Dearest, I adore your 20's style artwork. I spy one on top of the cabinet as well, a boy in short pants.... would love to see these closer! Who are the artists? And you've got a rooster collection! Wonderful on all the small shelves of that delightful Victorian buffet!
Everything feel already perfectly lived in, not at all like you just moved in.
I am off to Berlin after tomorrow, I can't wait to be with the boys and see everything they have lined up for me!
Berlinale is going on and we will see movies!
Hope all is well and you are doing great! I am looking forward to finding a fresh post from you come March!
    Bon voyage to Budapest!

  33. Languishing in Brighton ... am I the only one who thinks that sounds like the title of a 1930s novel.

    Take care x

    ReplyDelete
  34. Dear Jane and Lance, let us strike a deal: I won't comment on your post (this comment is void) and you won't feel obliged by friendliness to respond to my (non)comment, as I'd much rather you spent that stolen moment doing a little more languishing in your peaceful rooms.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What a beautiful room you have shown us! I notice that a lot of people like your chickens, they look like roosters to me! (Showing my rural background, I suppose!)
    Hope you are both well.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love the painting on the wall - very refined lifestyle those people seem to be leading :)

I don't love the chooks but all collectors should have a collecting passion, regardless of what other people think. I asked my children which pieces from the collection they would like, after Joe and I shuffle off this mortal coil. They assured me the objects would be sold within a week of our demise!!!

  37. Looks like the perfect place to relax. All those books look very appealing. Enjoy being lazy...surely one of life's luxuries! Have a wonderful break, look after yourselves. Annie x.

  41. Blogger has been tempermental lately and I hope they address the issues.

Enjoy the last days by the seaside. I hope the weather is spring-like in Budapest. Safe journey home.

  42. I, like Parnassus, wondered if the portrait is of the two of you. Unlike her (why do I think Parnassus is a she?) I thought the double arch compartmentalised the two of you (if they are 'the two of you') which initially I thought might not be right, but then I thought well you are different people, even if you do often appear to think as one. You probably think as one in different ways. That may not make sense.
The cabinet/dresser is a strange being - I'm thinking inherited. It's like the furniture my parents bought from Austin's secondhand furniture emporium in Peckham in the 60s.
I leave cockerels to the tender introspections of more Jungian minds than mine! Love, Alec xx

  43. I'm always pleased when I see a new post from the Hattatts in my blog roll. What a fine collection of strutting cocks you have there. I've been thinking about starting a collection of Domenica More Gordon's woollen canine creations, they come in kit form which is a bit worrying, as it will probably turn out looking like a screaming skull you might see dangling on a piece of string in a third rate ghost train.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Lovely to hear from you, and the photograph in a way tells it all. What is that wonderful painting, is it?, off to the right? But then, it's the ambience altogether. That chair, so inviting, surrounded as it is, with books to read, art, and comfort in a beautiful style.

  47. It's good to hear that all is well in Jane and Lance's world. Brighton is a great place to relax and re-charge so enjoy. .... and, don't worry about commenting ....real life and a bit of R & R is often far more important than a post or a comment. See you in March ! XXXX

  48. I do hope the weather has been good for you in Brighton, as I hear that parts of Europe have been suffering through a difficult winter.

What a lovely room you have to sit and relax the days away. Hope you are having a wonderful time.

We are all anxiously awaiting your return in March. A week without a post from the Hattats is a sad one.

  49. There is something a little fowl about the room, but I love the standard lamp and the painting is nice too.

  50. Hello, Jane and Lance,

Now I notice that there are roosters in the living room, as well as the bedroom. Have you counted the total? I think it's a delightful collection ...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think it's lovely that you're lazily languishing but I do look forward to March's arrival : )

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have watched too many Agatha Christie Movies so the words Brighton languish, enjoyably and lazily seem to go together beautifully.
Enjoy the salt air and Brighton before you return to Budapest.

    cheers, parsnip

  53. One does so adore chickens atop the chimney surround. It adds a whimsical buccolic aspect to your smart interiros, and is--I am sure--the delight of your guests, at least the cleverer ones I suspect. Reggie

  56. Only yesterday, I managed to (once again!!) add your blog to my reading list - it keeps disappearing, and each time I hope this time I'll re-add it for good.

  62. Lovely to see you once again and to think of you being in England adding to its richness! I am not sure I exactly understand what you mean by 'unless you comment again' -- does that mean that if a comment does not appear that if you make another comment then both comments appear? Hope the rest of your stay is idyllic and you will grace our shores again in the not too distant future. Oh Love the painting!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Dear Jane and Lance,
It is utterly charming to see your two beautifully arranged drawing rooms side by side. Lazily languishing in Brighton rooms . . . sounds just about what I would imagine from Jane Austen's era. Grand to keep the tradition alive in our hurried times. I am enchanted with the painting . . . where what might be a spy couple . . . enjoying wine and dining. I feel there must be a story there. Love the two fellows in the background. Fabulous composition and subtle colors. Love the compliments of the wine and dress. All brings to mind E. Hopper. I do hope you have ample days of languor and enjoyment of the warmer sea climate and wish you a safe return to your other charming home. Thanks for your lavish contributions to all our world . . . one of your posts or comments can be savored for a goodly amount of time. Apologies not necessary. Take good care. Carol

    ReplyDelete
  64. PS . . . Clever how you have the portrait of the little boy fully framed within the mirror of your fanciful sideboard. A child surrounded by roosters! I can imagine them all a flutter with his becoming alive and in chase. ;>))

    ReplyDelete
  65. I am fascinated with the roosters! Is there a story about your decision to collect these? They don't seem to have the sophistication to reside in your wonderful rooms.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Just take your time Jane and Lance. I am happy to hear all is well and you are merely buzy.

    Love your collection of cockerels!
