High Society

In the late nineteenth century painters, poets and philosophers gathered around tables in the coffee houses of Budapest creating the Café Society of which the city is understandably famous. Lively conversations of patronage, politics and Plato took place over slim cigarettes and strong espressos with the whiff of smoke and revolution in the air.

Now in twenty-first century Budapest, the 'Paris of the East' and 'Pearl of the Danube' is witnessing a new revival. As its buildings become stripped of decades of grime, revealing the Art Nouveau splendour beneath, as the fashion houses of Europe find new homes on the City's grand boulevards, and as the concert halls, Opera House, galleries, museums, theatres and Art cinemas offer a culture rich enough to attract the most discerning of international audiences, so the 'Champagne Society' is alive and buzzing in Budapest.

And nowhere is this more in evidence than at a fabulous party given recently in the devastatingly stylish drawing room of our friend and internationally renowned interior decorator, Richard Adams. Housed in a magnificent turn of the century building, with direct views to the Danube and iconic Liberation Statue, Richard's apartment breathes glamour and good taste from every room.

Richard Adams' impeccable eye for colour combinations is much in evidence throughout

Throughout the apartment the classical and modern sit comfortably side by side. Furniture, fabrics and objets d'arts from a range of styles and eras are mixed and matched with effortless elegance. And just like the rooms he decorates, Richard is immaculately dressed, perfectly tailored and beautifully scented. Here is a cosmopolitan aesthete who is master of his art.

as always immaculately turned out, Richard Adams caught off guard in his drawing room

A twentieth century Rietveld chair is placed with a French eighteenth century lacquered, ormolu mounted bureau plat upon which a framed cast of family and friends is displayed. Gilt bronze candleholders, shaped as monkeys, are positioned playfully with Carrara marble lamps, fashioned as obelisks, mounted on the backs of gilded turtles. A chinoiserie cormandel marble topped commode acts as a drinks table from which, on party nights, copious quantities of champagne are generously poured.

Everywhere, looking glasses disorientate divinely, manipulating space and form to deceive and delight at every turn. Sumptuous sofas, plumped with cushions and leopard print throws, beckon one to sink into them. Armchairs open their arms invitingly wide to view the gallery worthy Martin C. Herbst sphere, sculpture by Amerigo Tot or the striking mural of Rubens 'Triumph of Church over Fury and Hate'. All around there is beauty and refinement, splendour without ostentation, impeccable taste, perfect proportion and a spare but undeniable voluptuousness.

The 'Champagne Society' gathers here. For this is a place where one can dress to kill, where one can be guaranteed the liveliest of conversation and where, on occasion, one's behaviour can be just that little bit naughty!

    1. Well, Tom, Richard most certainly must be considered lead violin, so to speak, but on occasion we should like to think of ourselves as second fiddle [largely where he leads us on!!].

As for the naughtiness, link will be provided to our undercover blog!!

We too, Wendy, rather go for champagne, any time, any place!!

I have palpitations as I slide down the page and see the colours, textures and scale used by Richard. The art alone would certainly have me dizzy. I say with respect Mr Ralph Lauren please take the second row. I know when I return later today, I shall be scrutinizing each item.
I can also dream of the parties and guests and know there would not be a dull moment.
Thank you for sharing this event of events.

Richard does indeed have an unerring eye for colour and texture and, as you point out, for scale too, something which eludes so very many designers. He also recognizes where and when an item of furniture, a painting or an arrangement of objets d'arts will look exactly right.

His parties are legendary! He certainly raises the bar in Budapest!

Do so trust that all is well with you and we are longing to know about the new Irish property. xxx

  8. Dearest Jane and Lance,

“Champagne Society”, the name alone conjures imagery of vanguard stylishness and the photographs exhibited here attest to this. Mr. Adams has created a most glorious setting in which such a society must feel magnetically drawn toward. The interiors are stunningly dramatic and restful, beautiful and practical restrained yet playful. Mr. Adams is truly a master of his art and possessor of an intuitive sense of design.

And I am most assured that Mr. Adams uses the same intuitiveness when organizing his guest list for gatherings intimate or grandiose by his inclusion of the “Couple Hattatt” owing to their effervescent nature, and where would “Champagne Society” be without its sparkle.

Wishing you both a wonderful day and a most glorious week. – gary

Richard is, believe us, the doyen of style and is, as a result, much sought after by discerning clients not only in Europe but much further afield as well. His apartment, to which he recently moved [some time back we posted on his previous one], is beautifully appointed in every respect and his unerring eye for detail is to be found wherever one looks. This you so obviously recognize, and would love.

The 'Couple Hattatt' are delighted to be included on his guest list; certainly life would be much, much duller without his extravagantly wonderful parties or intimate dinners.

And you too, Gary, have an enjoyable week.

Now this is a room I would expect to find Grace Kelly if not Frank and Bing. You did introduce me to the fascinating Mr. Adams (that surname always seems to be coupled with interesting people) a while back and this gorgeous room adds more colour and texture to the man who arranged it so well. The room itself would likely be the most interesting character in any scene you could imagine there. In this case, more is more.

While the prospect of attending a party hosted by the charming Mr. Adams seems irresistibly alluring, I think an even more enchanting evening would have us all out on a night of Hattattian Revelry with Mr. Adams unencumbered by seeing to his guests. Let the £3 champagne flow freely and the splendors of Budapest send our spirits soaring.

    1. Darling G,

Had she still been alive, then we have no doubt at all that Grace Kelly, and many others like her, would have found their way into Richard's drawing room. Such is his charisma and beguiling charm.

Yes, indeed, you were 'introduced' to Richard a while back, but in his previous apartment. His move to these splendid rooms on the Danube, combined with his most recent party, seemed an opportune moment to reveal a little more of our very dear, American born, British friend who, we know, you will simply adore.

And why should we not combine together to throw the party of a lifetime? All that we require to know is the date upon which you will be landing on our shores [something of a foolish expression in landlocked Hungary but we trust our meaning is clear!!].

In the meantime we grow old and infirm awaiting news of, if not the reality, of 'The Lion's Den'!!

    3. Dear Claire,

You are so right! Promises, promises, promises. And all the time we thought we were dealing with a man of the up most integrity, a man to be trusted on every count, someone from whom we would buy a second hand motor car, who we would allow into the house to mend the washing machine, whose advice on all matters sartorial and [most likely] financial we should follow to the letter. Can he have any understanding of our deep disappointment? Does 'The Lion's Den' even exist in embryo? These are the questions we are all asking!! Let us join forces to hammer on every Chicago door to demand justice!!

    4. My Darlings Jane and Lance and delightfully persistent Claire,
My deepest apologies for my tardiness in launching The Lion's Den. The only thing I lack is technical expertise to hopefully give it even a small measure of Adamsesque visual grandeur as everything else I can handle. A proper setting is rather important wouldn't you agree J & L???...a big difference between Budapest and Bangladesh and I'd like TLD to be more like the former than the latter and if there must be delays until I can get the right look then I'll endure your quite justified scolding's and hope to make amends later.

Now darling Claire, funny that you mention the Hadron Collider as I've got quite a surprise for those boys over at CERN. They only think they're discovered the God Particle...I'll be showing them how wrong they are!!!

    5. Our Darling G,

Of course, all is forgiven. Once more we have succumbed to your offensive, once more we are putty in your hands, once more we are beguiled by your charm and, as doubtless you intend, we are seduced yet again by your frankness and flattery. What is another month's delay? Let another season come and go for we know, no are certain, that the day that TLD erupts with a mighty roar into our inbox the wait will not have been in vain. Think you not so, Claire?!!

    6. Dear Hattatts, you are both blessed with gracious and forgiving natures. Alas, I am not. Dear GSL has been quite the tease for such a long time that I have run out of patience. I think he might want to consider changing the name of his elusive blog from The Lion's Den to The Pussycat's Parlour. I shall now have a very stiff Gin & Tonic to help me cope with yet another false dawn (wipes tears of disappointment with gin-soaked lace hanky) Claire

    7. Dear Claire,

Are we not bidden to forgive one another, to turn the other cheek, not to cast the first stone [or something of that ilk]? But, that said, we can barely contain our disappointment as each hope raised is dashed firmly to the ground. No, Claire, even 'The Pussycat's Parlour' is suggestive of some bite, a force we no longer believe to be there. Much better 'The Musing of a Mouse' or 'The Whimper of a Whelk'. But for now, let us cast care aside and join you in drowning our sorrows in several G & Ts!!

      Delete
    8. Touche' Claire, now dry those tears you poor girl as TLD will soon provide much of what's missing in your life...for the rest, I'm sure you'll be making arrangements to join me at the soon to be reopened The Red Lion in Chicago a gathering place for the literati as we are now patiently waiting on bureaucratic red tape to go through the proper channels. Mid-July is what we were last told and that does have some bearing on TLD. I'll have a Gin & Tonic waiting on you...

    9. Very well done J & L!!! Of all your great gifts, the one I most long to bask in is your rapier wit. Under Queensbury rules, I am now receiving the 10 count from the referee...

    10. We cannot, of course, speak for Claire but we are somewhat envious that she possibly is nearer enough to Chicago, if not actually there, to join in the celebrations which will mark the reopening of The Red Lion later this summer. Now that is something we should not wish, were we to be invited and were it possible to wish ourselves across the Atlantic, for anything. As it is we shall have to content ourselves with scrutinising every single report of which, we are sure, there will be many.

  19. Hello Jane and Lance, Mr. Adams' remarkable apartment well illustrates the fact that design does not belong in a vacuum. In this case, it is an extension of all that is going on in surrounding Budapest, and further takes its place by becoming the setting for occasions that give the city its tone.

  35. Richard Adams' interior reflects, and complements the seeming decadence of the city of Budapest!

Do you both ever sometimes miss your previous gardening life in Herefordshire? :)

    1. We do assure you that Budapest is not totally decadent!! Rather it is a city with a very rich cultural life with a particular emphasis, or certainly where we are concerned, on classical music.

Strangely, and you will probably find this hard to believe, we do not miss our Herefordshire life, apart from our friends, at all. Twenty-five years of weeding the borders is more than enough!!

  42. This is a very sincere question. I quite like the look of Biedermeier mixed with Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Fauvism and Vienna Secession. But what happens if we add in Art Deco, Bauhaus, Russian Brutal etc etc. Should there be any limit to the designer's vision?

  65. My dearest Jane and Lance,

First of all, I absolutely adore the new pictures of you at The Várfok Gallery. It's oh-so-stylish! I have been meaning to say this ever since I saw your new pictures.

How privileged are we to be invited to the fabulous house of Mr Richard Adams! His eyes for the details and his aesthetics in combining various textures and colours is extraordinary. His world surely must be a colourist's world where, if one is admitted, one would feel like a butterfly with wings to gather the ripe pigments in the garden of enchanted purples, gold, greens and blues.

Now, back to reality, I must go back and tidy up the dust gathering on my study table before the dust slips from the finite to the infinite. But then you probably know what Quentin Crisp once said about the dust?

Hope you are having the best possible week.

You are so very kind to say about the pictures. But then you are very kind.

We are so pleased that you too like Richard's apartment. As an interior decorator and designer he displays enormous talent. What appeals to us in particular is, as you so pertinently point out, his ability to combine colours and textures to such effect and in ways which are for the most part beyond one's imagination. But to that must be added his very firm grasp of the principles upon which his subject is based, his exacting standards and his total professionalism within his field of work.

If we were not so fortunate as to have Tímea daily flitting around with a feather duster in one hand and a mop in the other, then we do believe our whole approach to housekeeping would, long ago, have descended into the realms of Quentin Crisp.

And may your week bring you much joy.

  82. Good Afternoon Jane and Lance, Your friend, Richard's apartment is breathtaking.... I can honestly say, I have never seen such a beautiful living space. There is so much to see and admire. I enjoyed viewing each photograph and I adore the white orchids which are displayed in the entrance hall.
Thank you for such a lovely treat. I hope you had lots of fun and managed to enjoy copious amounts of champagne.
    Best Wishes to you both.
    Daphne

    1. We did, thank you, manage to consume copious quantities of champagne and, Daphne, we have to confess that we have done this on many occasions at Richard's apartment and at various bars, restaurants and cafés with him throughout Budapest!

Richard's apartment is indeed breathtaking, the view alone is simply wonderful and he has cleverly maximised the effect by raising the floor level. He is undaunted and fearless when it comes to achieving a desired look. We should never have the courage.

  83. Dear Jane and Lance,
Apologies for the lateness of this comment - I have been busy getting settled in New York and starting school - but I must say, thank for posting this little peek of 'Champagne Society' in Budapest. Mr. Adams' apartment is stunning!!! His mix of antique and modern styles is masterful!

    1. Louise, thank you so much for your comment. Lateness to the party does not matter, we are pleased to see our guests arriving at any hour!

We are delighted that you like Richard's apartment. It is indeed the way he controls and combines styles of many periods into a sophisticated and satisfactory whole that is his true talent. He has a zest for life like no other person we know and we love him for it!

  84. Stunning. I’d like to wander around that flat like our Rachel, with my hands behind my back and just STUDY it all. My heart delighted in that pea green sofa. I also love the photographs. I think a home is soulless without them. And I love the layers. I always say that my design style is ‘collage’. Just pile it on and I’m happy. A swath of pretty hankerchiefs, a couple of mismatched antique tea cups and cookies on a cake plate found at a thrift store and I have a party! I could live forever in Mr. Adams’ lovely flat. As long as he agreed to a pile of books beside the most comfortable chair!

    1. Richard's apartment, and its situation overlooking the Danube, is remarkable, Kim, and he has designed it and furnished it with such flair and imagination. Previously it was in unspeakable condition.

Your own style, which you describe so imaginatively, as a 'collage', is exactly the kind of thing to which we warm instantly. We really do love eclecticism and abhor everything bought to match!!

We always so enjoy being at Richard's and he really is the greatest of company.
