I have two Hungarian friends back in Toronto, and I remember as a little girl, their mothers making the most delicious deli sandwiches with Hungarian salami, cheese, and peppers. For beans, polenta and popcorn, we go to an Asian market in the west end of Newcastle (upon Tyne). Bill (who can travel free on the Metro - £24/yr being close enough to free for us) goes into Grainger Market each week for our fruit and veg. For unusual game we can go into a local butchers or to the specialist stall at the Tynemouth Flea Market. For the rest we go to boring old Morrisons. In Australia, not only have all of our 19th century markets being kept in every capital city, there is now an absolute plethora of farmers markets springing up in the suburbs across the country - all touting free range eggs, freshly baked bread, picked that morning veggies, etc. There has also been a return to the local butcher & baker ( although the candle stick makers are still absent). Coupled with growth in online shopping too. So perhaps we will all end up with lots of fresh food local shopping which is very direct, and online for drygoods - with the death of the horrid shopping malls.
