We adore churches and this one is a gem. You also make me smarter! I just spent 15 minutes reading all about the Bloomsbury Set - I had a tangential awareness of them and their 'doings', but knew nothing of substance. Now I know more and have had a nice dose of old fashioned gossip at the same time. It makes learning much easier, doesn't it? I think Wolff is very com...My dear Jane and Lance,

I think Wolff is very comfortably placed among contemporary Women's Fiction, but I also believe that her work has more to offer. I do recommend Minty, among all her novels, as well as 'A Vintage Affair.' There is a lightness to all of her books, but also something of a sharpness which slices across the surface of things and penetrates to some of the layers which lie, patiently awaiting discovery, beneath. I do wonder if you'd agree.

As for Connie Willis, I don't know if either of you would love the Science Fiction elements in that book. It is not my usual fare, but it was so terribly clever in spots. In that regard, I think you would be pleased.

Consider them both literature that goes down easy but with a spot here and there that takes you beautifully off guard in its own quirky way.

(Quite the description I wouldn't mind for my own earnest scribblings.)

As for the lingering Woolfish presence in Monk's house, how utterly, dare I say it?
