Tempus Fugit

'Dark Runs the River'
Lance Hattatt's debut novel

Time and tide, or so the old adage would have it, waits for no man. With that in mind we can scarcely believe it is now some four years - something of an admission - since our last post, 'Heracles' in the Drawing Room. But we have not been idle. In fact, far from it. ‘Dark Runs the River’ is the result of an idea which began as nothing more than that, an idea, one which, slowly, over time gradually took shape, going first in one direction, then in another, until finally it came together into something which, after considerable revision,  could possibly be called a manuscript. And so, a novel was born. Intrigued? Click on the link Dark Runs the River for the publisher’s preview.

Unpacking advanced copies - excitement - prior to publication day 15th. August, 2025

Since publication, 15th. August, 2025, it has been something of a whirlwind with both a book signing, here in Budapest, and a ‘Literary Luncheon’ held in the small Devonshire coastal town (although we tend to think of it as a village) of Budleigh Salterton.

Signing copies of ‘Dark Runs the River’ at Bestsellers, Budapest

Bestsellers, the leading English language Bookshop in Budapest, took the brave decision to order what seemed like an alarmingly large quantity of books for the occasion and which, seeing them stacked on the table, did cause the two of us to feel somewhat apprehensive. In the event, it proved to be a complete sell out with several people having to be content to wait for further supplies to be reordered. With Hungarian champagne flowing, and delicious canapés to enjoy, and friends from near and far (including two who flew in especially from Stockholm) it turned into the most joyful of evenings.

In readiness for the ‘Literary Luncheon’, Milena’s Café. Budleigh Salterton, Devonshire

Milena, of Milena’s Café, is known throughout Devonshire and beyond for the ways in which she combines the traditional with the innovative, using locally sourced ingredients, to produce dishes which not only look appealing to the eye but taste delicious. She did not disappoint and the lunchtime sped by with a great deal of mirth, merriment and, not least, the meeting up of friends old and new. Such fun!

Some of the first reviews (abridged) which appeared shortly after publication

And now, two months on, it is particularly touching, and gratifying, to read the reviews placed on the websites of Waterstones and Amazon in praise of ‘Dark Runs the River’. For those who may be interested, ‘Dark Runs the River’ may be ordered from Amazon, Austin Macauley (the publishers), Bestsellers (Budapest), Foyles, T.G. Jones, Waterstones and leading booksellers worldwide.

Your thoughts are, as always, greatly appreciated. And do look out for our next post!

  2. What a joy this October morn---a serendipitous missive of cheer and good tidings and FABULOUS news! He DID IT!! Whole Company HUZZAH!

As surprised as I was to find such a trove of good news (and somehow reprints of my own comments to you, from some of those dark days when you were a great BRIGHT on my Horizon)---to have this lovely book to look forward to is simply splendid.

I'm needed upstairs for a LONG session of opening boxes and lugs and great lost treasures, in that we had to have the entire house stripped to the echoes and REWIRED, top to bottom. And what six different crews of folks doing nine different things can do to household, hearth and HEART is stunning---we've been occupied since MAY, and still all the stuff in the basement (which is totally lived in, and the other half of the house) is stacked and strewn and spilling, so we have help carrying UP today, stocking the upstairs closets and cupboards.

I'll carry this welcome news as I open, welcome back the Santas of decades, close, re-wrap, choose for this year. Thank you for the sweet comment---it was a little re-run of long ago, when Sweetpea came to us every day. We'll be attending her SENIOR year's final Band Concert a week hence, and remembering, remembering.

    Happy Fall, Y'all!!

    1. Darling Rachel,

And, how wonderful to be connected once more in Blogland. Though the years may have separated us, nevertheless, it is just as yesterday that we were writing over the Blogosphere to each other and HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!
Your house refurbishments sound overwhelming. Surely there cannot be the tiniest bit of your home which has not been attacked. We can only hope that this will mean many glorious years of trouble-free living and enjoying your lovely surroundings.

We very much hope that you too may be inspired to write a book. You have such a glorious way with words and the ideas just come pouring out. It would be just fabulous to see you in PRINT.

Whatever, thank you for taking the time and trouble to write a comment in your hectic day. Good luck with everything and speak again soon!!

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write.
How intriguing that you know of Budleigh Salterton and live quite near. It is rather a hidden treasure and we shall be posting more about it in our future blogs. We have had an apartment there since 2022 and love it. We feel that we are back in the 1950s.
We very much look forward to staying in touch.

  4. I am so pleased you are back. I kept you on my blogroll all these years in case you returned. Very exciting news to hear of Lance's novel and the book signing, I will look up the book. My current post describes a visit to Wales to see many castles that my husband and I took years ago.

    1. Darling Terra,

How kind of you to keep waiting for our return. Over the years we have kept thinking of our many Blog chums, a number of which have appeared on Instagram. Nevertheless, it is good to be back in the land of writers and your post on the Welsh castles was most interesting. It prompted many memories of our own time in the Welsh March when forays into Wales were frequent.

It is good to be back.

Thank you for your kind wishes about the novel. It was a long time in the writing but there is a second just waiting in the wings. It was so exciting to see the words on a computer translate into a real book to be held in the hands. There is nothing like it!!!

We look forward to staying connected.

  7. Hello Jane and Lance, Even though your blog has been dark (mine has been very little better) I should have known that the Hattatts are not ones to let the grass grow under their feet. Congratulations: A novel is a significant undertaking, and I imagine different in every aspect from gardening books. And Dark runs the River is such an intriguing title, rife with metaphor and presage. (At least we know that the book does not take place in 1960's Cleveland, where the Cuyahoga River caught fire, and despite all its other problems, at least ran brightly.) Speaking of Cleveland, I am hoping to get there next year, at which time I will certainly order your book. As soon as I saw the name Alice Kendrick on the Youtube preview, I knew she was up to no good, so now I will have to find out how it all ends.

Thank you so much for your kind comment. It is very much appreciated. Whilst Lance did all the writing for the book, my sole contribution was the title. I think I was influenced by the many crime novels that I read but that Lance does not. Alice Kendrick is indeed up to no good.....

Gosh, a river catching fire must have been a very scary experience. We had never heard of this. This is always so intriguing about the Blogosphere that one gets to know so much outside one's own immediate experiences.

We shall go and catch up with your adventures and shall look forward to staying in touch.

The book took a long time in the writing and the publishing but it is such a thrill to have a real book in one's hands rather than just words on a computer screen. There is really nothing like it.

Congratulations on Lance's first novel!! (Does "first" mean there will be a second, and maybe more?)
It must be so exciting to see one's work in print, in a proper book, and how rewarding to read the great reviews.
Celebrating in style, both in Budapest and Devonshire, adds to the fun, of course, and is well deserved.

As you say, the moment words on a computer screen became a real book to hold in the hand, then it really was exciting. The book took a long time in the creating but there is a second waiting in the wings and a third of ideas floating about. The book launch in Budapest and Literary Lunch in Budleigh Salterton were huge fun and even one friend of Lance's who we had not seen for decades came to join in the fun. Wonderful.

So pleased to find that you are still here in Blogland giving wonderful reading suggestions. We are looking forward to staying in touch.

Like you, my blog has suffered greatly the past couple of years when life got in the way and time was too short for lengthy blogging. I have now decided I just need to get on with it when I can, take some time for me again, so I too have posted this week!
Lance, I've completed your book - many nights of page turning in anticipation and enjoyment, loving and worrying about the main characters. I found it to be a very special read and it brought back so many of memories of my own life in England prior to emigrating here.
Sending love and good wishes to you both - we recall our time together and relive those very special days with you in Budapest so often.
See you again here soon I hope.

How very very kind of you to take the time and trouble to write here. We can well understand how your time has been taken dealing with the many health issues which have come your way but, as we have found, it is rather wonderful to connect with so many different people across continents in the Blogosphere. So, we hope that you too can be persuaded to spend just a little time here to write.

And, Lance thanks you for the very kind words about the book. It was a long and intense time in its writing and my only contribution was the title which I think was a result of all the crime novels I read [which Lance does not!!].
We too have happy memories of our meeting in Budapest. It is always a magical moment when the virtual and real worlds collide.
We send our best love to you both and wish you happy travelling once more in the not too distant future.

    1. Darling Debra,

Thank you for your kind comment.

The novel was a long time in making but the day was filled with excitement when a real book could be held in the hand. No amount of digital words can replace the wonderful feeling of an actual book.
The second novel is being revised but nearly ready to go and a third is in the imagination. That could be the last. It is all such an intense and tiring process, filled with many rejections before finally an acceptance. We have certainly lived by the motto "try and try again".
Your congratulations are very gratefully received.

3- Congratulations on the novel. I must look into this. It a huge accomplishment to do so. I have several friends you wrote much smaller novels, and I know the work they put into it.

4- If I get back to Budapest anytime soon, I will send my carrier pigeon with notice. On my jaunt there, I did remember however you two lived there and wondered what you might be up too. Easy to see why you choose to live there. I enjoyed my brief affair with the city.

  15. My dear Jane and Lance,

What a lovely and wholly unexpected surprise it was to see your name appear again after such a long silence on the blog; only to discover that your absence had been in the service of creation itself.

Dark Runs the River—how fine and fitting that your time away from the blogosphere has yielded something so lasting, so entirely your own.

I can easily imagine what a joy those launch gatherings must have been: the clinking of Hungarian champagne glasses, the laughter of friends, the scent of Milena’s good cooking mingling with the fresh pages of your book. How richly deserved that your work should have been so warmly received and celebrated.

I can’t wait to read it. The synopsis is utterly enticing; the kind of story that speaks directly to me. The themes of love, loyalty, and the quiet heroism of endurance, set against a backdrop of gardens, church towers, and Venice, sound exactly my kind of book.

To have produced such a novel, and to see it find its readers with gratitude and delight, is no small thing. It is a gift, both to those who read it and to those who have followed your quiet dedication to craft and beauty over the years.

Congratulations, dear Lance, on this remarkable achievement.

With warmest admiration and many congratulations,

    1. Darling ASD,

How can we thank you for such a warm and tender comment? Your words mean so very much to us both.

The novel was a long time in the making but one of the very good things that was a result of isolation in the times of Covid. Lance would be the first to say that although one can start a book with a beginning and an end, the middle seems to wind its way with almost a free will with characters really taking on lives of their own. My only contribution was the title...the result, most probably of years of reading crime novels.:):)

Such joy it was to find you still creating beautiful posts in Blogland. Always visually stunning and interlaced with words of wisdom for reflection. We trust that life is treating you well and that you are thriving. One day, a dear hope that we cherish, is that our paths will cross in the real world. Take the greatest care. J and L xx
