Us, Ourselves and We

'Teddy, Jane and Lance At Home', Painting by Orr Máté

In this era of 'Me, Myself and I', when social media is littered with flattering images, mostly, one suspects, photoshopped to a greater or lesser degree, of beautiful people intent on recognition, self advertisement and/or self promotion, we hesitate, after an absence of almost six years, to appear to follow the same route. But lest we should be totally forgotten by those who have faithfully continued to follow, we felt a little reminder might not go amiss. And for this we ask your indulgence.

The painting, 'Teddy, Jane and Lance At Home', now hanging in our Budapest Drawing Room, was not a commission. We should hope that our arrogance does not extend that far. Rather the artist, Orr Máté, to write the name in the Hungarian way, thought, with a portrait competition in mind, that it might be fun to portray Teddy, who has not had a public outing for some considerable time, in this way. We are included to give balance to the composition! That said, we were, and are, delighted to have Teddy immortalised on canvas and, even more so, to count Máté as one of our closest friends here in Hungary. Represented by the Várfok Gallery in Budapest, he has established an international reputation and his work is now widely collected.

These are uncertain, difficult and challenging times when human contact, real and virtual, perhaps matters more than ever before. What better time to make a come back to the world of Blogger and to catch up with past friends and, hopefully, forge friendships anew.

  1. Hello, and good to see you. I noticed you visited my blog yesterday. I do like the painting, perfectly balanced. News from Norwich is we are getting through lockdowns pretty well without a lot of fuss and bother just as you would expect of us.

    1. Darling Rachel,

Thank you so much for your kind comment.

Yes, we looked around to see who, if anyone, still remained on Blogger but there you were and how good is that!

It is good to know that you are safe and well and getting through as well as one can. These are strange, difficult and, on occasion, frightening times, so positive connections are to be treasured.

      Keep on, keeping on!

  2. I had to look twice when I saw Hattatt on my dashboard and was delighted that my old eyes have not deceived me. My gosh, it has been six years since we last read your posts and I, for one, am so glad to see you back on Blogger. So much has changed; many have left for other venues, and more so since the virus, but there are still some of us who enjoy this outlet.

I like the picture for many reasons but mostly because it is just fun.

Welcome, welcome back, Jane and Lance.

It seems like an age but, also, a mere moment, that we were last communicating. It is so good and reassuring to find you here in Blogland.

Your latest post hinted of a possible withdrawal from blogging. Please stay. The tide is turning in your country and positive times lie ahead. All will be well and old as well as new connections are to be treasured.

Yes, posing for the picture was huge fun. Red lipstick and nail varnish and spotty socks gave us both courage. We love Máté's work and are so privileged to be able to count him amongst our closest friends.

Thank you so much for your kind and warm welcome. We send warm virtual hugs to you from a cold and wintry Budapest. xx

  3. Dear Jane and Lance,
It was such a pleasant surprise to see you come up on my reading feed. I'm so happy to see you back in blogland. That's a fabulous painting of you and Teddy. How delightful to have such a lovely and personal work of art! The artist did a beautiful job. The images of your home are truly a feast for the eyes on this very cold Sunday morning. I'm so glad you're back!
I too have not posted in a while, and as you will notice, my blog is no longer Musings From Harmonie House as I have moved away and now live in my sweet Ninth Brook Cottage. I believe your return might be the inspiration I need to return to blogging.
Yes, during these difficult times it's always lovely to connect and reconnect with friends near, far, and through the written word.
    Blissful Tidings,

We shall definitely seek you out in your new Blogger home!

We are delighted that you like the painting. We love it and the artist and it was huge fun posing for the preliminary photographs and then watching the painting come to 'life'. It ended up bigger than planned so it is a good job that we had the space since we always imagined it in the same room as the sofa upon which Teddy always sits.

Do return to Blogland!! We have had a quick tour of the Blogosphere to see who, if anyone, is still here and there are a number of significant gaps. Let there be a revival since connecting across countries and continents has never been so needed in our view.

Thank you so much for your kind comment. Sending you warm virtual hugs and wishes for a joyful year ahead. xx

  4. My goodness, dear Jane and Lance, after you popping up on Pat's blog, where your comment brightened my wet and dreary morning, I thought I'd come here yet again just for old times sake, and here you are in all the glory of the Budapest apartment (so familiar to me), and I couldn't be happier to see you both and learn that you are going to blog again!!! I almost shed a few tears, and could't wait to share this great news with Bob.

Orr's painting of the three of you ("hi Teddy") is so
fabulous - and I'm thrilled knowing you still have the apt. - it holds great memories for Bob and me of course.

So my dears, please post more and update us all who have missed you so much. We have missed traveling terribly this past year - and sadly even now don't see much happening this year either. I'm homesick for Devon, my family and friends.
Stay well - be safe - and know we always keep you close in thought.

    1. Darling Mary and Bob,

Thank you so very much for these kind words. Kindness is to be treasured, especially in these strange and difficult times, and your words have touched us both very much.

We remember fondly your time here in Budapest. It is always a joy when the virtual and real worlds collide and we look back on that time of our meeting with pleasure. Such moments mean even more these days with isolation all around.

We are so pleased that you like the painting. We love it and find that it brings smiles to the faces of all who see it. It is joyful and lifts the spirits in so many ways. Teddy looks on from his permanent post on the sofa and we do wonder what can be going on in his sawdust head!!!

We shall be popping around Blogland catching up with everyone as soon as we can. When we first started our blog we were isolating and, now, here we are again, so it seemed a good time to resume our activities.

We have missed our blog chums very much but we hold you all close to our hearts.

      Keep safe. xxx

  6. Hello Jane and Lance, You two and your blog simply could not be forgotten. I think of you a thousand times, when your interests come up, or Budapest, or I review an old blog and with enjoyment re-read one of your classic comments.

What a great portrait with Teddy, excellent in so many ways. Orr Máté seems destined to make a splash in the art world--from his Instagram page, he must be making it already.

We have considered a return on many occasions but today seemed like the day to resume our activities.

So many of our blog chums seem to have disappeared so it is really good to reconnect with those still penning words in the Blogosphere.

We are so pleased that you like the painting. Orr Máté does indeed go from strength to strength. Indeed, keeping up with producing paintings when so many collectors want the work is a happy problem which he has.

We shall hope to see much more of you and your interesting posts in future months. Until now, we send warm virtual hugs from downtown Budapest.

You are not going to believe this, but last week I was 'cleaning' the list of blogs I read, getting rid of ones that haven't been active for quite some time. We did not realise that the Four Seasons Hotel had a rooftop vegetable garden. The Hotel was just a blackened, burnt out wreck of a place when we first came to Budapest. It has certainly seen a renaissance since then but how people afford the eye-wateringly high prices mystifies us.

  36. You have no idea...no idea, how tickled I was to see your comment on this snowy day here in Bucks County. I have often thought of you two and hoped you were well. The painting looks excellent in the drawing room. It has a fun feel to it. A friend of mine who used to paint with oils, started doing pastels and watercolors. About two years ago he asked me to nude model for him as he wanted to start doing human subjects and wanted to enter a art exhibit here on all mediums of art, showcasing the nude human form. The show was doing quite well and then sadly got shut down due to the pandemic. But the series he did, three of his works sold. Recently he and his partner downsized and moved away...and he gifted me the one of the two of myself that didn't get sold. I will always treasure it. I still can't believe some days I did that. So I say enjoy being immortalised in art!

    Welcome back Jane and Lance!

    1. Darling Mistress,

Thank you for your warm welcome and kind message.

We must confess that nudity [often his own] plays a large role in the works of Máté Orr, but we were simply not brave enough [nor, wisely, did he ask] to offer to pose in the nude.

How wonderful your portrait sounds. We trust that it has pride of place somewhere where visitors can admire and appreciate it!

The pandemic has, sadly, curtailed much of cultural life but at least online platforms are providing a means for artists to still show and, more importantly, sell their work. These are difficult times, but your gain of a work unsold is a lovely benefit and reminder of the happy memory.

Immortalised in art and the blogosphere....what more can one ask for in life?

We are so pleased that you like the painting. We love it and Máté the artist.

Lockdown [since 11th March and counting] has taught us that delight can be found in the simplest of pleasures and one has so much more time to reflect and just be. we are certain that you will be glamorous and inspirational by just being you.

I was only just beginning to follow a few blogs when you last posted and I did not start a blog myself until a year ago.

I very much enjoyed reading your return post and the painting you have shown us is wonderful! In fact I had to go visit the artist's page and was so happy to find it!

  40. My dearest Jane and Lance,

Welcome back! It's absolutely wonderful to welcome you back into the circle of friends again. I do love the painting by Orr Máté. What a talented painter. It looks fabulous and reminds me a little bit of David Hockney's 'Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy' at Tate Britain.

I hope you both are keeping well, staying safe and Teddy is watching over you.

We are so pleased that you like the painting and know that you would love Máté as we do. When we can all be in the same room together, that would be such a joyful occasion. Let us hope that this virtual dream will be a reality one day.

Yes, Teddy and Edward watch over us each day. It is good to have their silent support without fear of judgement!!

  42. Hullo Dear Jane and Lance!

I was so surprised and delighted to see your capital 'H' appear on my followers list, for although we hadn't met before in the blog world, your reputations did precede you! I believe our paths did cross when I had a brief foray into Instagram, so I had the opportunity to admire the portrait of Teddy & Co. ahead of some bloggers, and feel for once that I'm not always late to the party.

My own adored teddy does live in the wardrobe, to protect his ageing form from the elements, but he is acknowledged and fondly regarded whenever my eyes pass over Mr. P's folded cashmere jumpers (he needs a comfortable resting place like your own Teddy reclining on his elegant sofa).

I'm very glad you've come back to dip your toes in the blog-waters, as I feel there is much quality and fine company to be found here, and look forward to seeing you and reading your future missives.

How wonderful that you have arrived. We saw the excellent company which you keep in the Blogosphere and were immediately entranced by your intriguing posts. We shall hope that you find something of interest in what we write.

Both Teddy and Edward have been with us since childhood and so have the war wounds to prove it. We love it that you too give your furry friend a comfortable place to relax and unwind.... it is, we think, a stressful role for a teddy bear as confidant to all our innermost secrets without spilling the beans to anyone else.

It has been far too long since we were last in Blogland and we have missed our blogging chums very much. There have already been many delights to greet us on our return and we shall look forward to many more fruitful encounters.

    1. Darling Friko,

Thank you for your kind comment.

In a spur of the moment decision, we returned to Blogland, perhaps spurred on by the reassuring need to connect in these uncertain times. And, what joy [tinged also with some sadness] that is has been to reconnect with 'old' chums and make new acquaintances in the blogging world.

Pandemic wise, Hungary has taken a route one might have anticipated. Heavy lockdown, curfews every night, closed borders, compulsory mask wearing etc.etc. all enforced by the police and army with draconian fines for transgressors. And now, we are to welcome Sputnik, not for flight into space but for vaccinations. Hey ho....at least the numbers of cases are much reduced from those elsewhere.

We are fine. Isolated and shielding upon consultant advice since 11th March but this has given much opportunity for reflection and amusement at home.

We were sad to read of your personal losses and hope that the imminent arrival of Spring to your delightful garden will restore your spirits. As you say, easier said than done.

Take care and stay safe. We shall be looking in!

I, too, have been reaching out to those with whom I've enjoyed sharing online conversations, hoping to learn what divertissements they employ to furbish their pandemic confinement. * Since we last exchanged notes, I've downsized and relocated to a small flat with a sunny patio. May I hope that as spring unfurls you master gardeners will share some ideas for container gardens? (I'm growing snacks rather than meals...)

Our gardening days are behind us but no doubt we shall include some hints and tips of favourite plants as we go. It is so satisfying to grow one's own food and harvest it straight from the garden. Even a snack tomato tastes so much better than shop bought.

I rather lost touch with blogging myself for complicated reasons but I always remember your erudite posts and the joy of reading (and seeing, as here) what feels like a cultured approach to living. Welcome back! Quality words, thoughts and pictures are lamentably rare and to see yours again is an uplifting reminder that nuance still exists and not all internet content need be polarised and polemical. Hello! Long time no see and no write. Too long.

Thank you for your most kind and generous comment. We returned on a whim and the feeling that strange times called for strange measures and nothing at the moment seems more needed than connections. "Only connect..." write Forster and how true that is in today's fast-paced and often self-centred world.

We do so like to think of your Teddy released from imprisonment in a spare room. Our Teddy is very sociable, not that at the moment there is anyone to be social with and not that he said very much even when there were guests. But, such stories these bears could tell....
